(FeaturedHeadlines.com) China is threatening to execute pro-independence Taiwan residents if they visit mainland China, further escalating the already worsening relations between the two nations.
These remarks by the Chinese communist government urged Taiwan to issue a travel advisory in which the island asked its citizens not to visit China until absolutely necessary.
According to the newly-elected president of Taiwan, Lai Ching-te, the Chinese government has no right to prosecute Taiwan’s people just because of their opinion. He added that the only way China can bring the region out of the persisting crisis is to engage in a bilateral dialogue with the democratically elected government of Taiwan, and the failure to do it would only escalate the situation.
After the travel advisory of the Taiwanese government, China went into damage control mode and clarified its statements. According to China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, “most Taiwanese” can still visit China freely, and its earlier remarks are only applicable to the “die hard” supporters of Taiwan.
China considers Taiwan as its essential part and vows to capture the island using its military might in the near future. President Xi Jinping has previously indicated that he plans to invade the island by 2027, which many geopolitical experts believe could start another major conflict in the world after the Russia-Ukraine war.
Beijing also regularly exhibits its military prowess in the waters surrounding Taiwan, which was evident in its recent power show that pushed many Taiwanese into panic. When the island welcomed its new president in May, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) started military drills around the island and called it a “strong punishment” to the separatist elements within Taiwan.
These drills also mobilized the US lawmakers who fled to the island and promised military support in case of a possible Chinese invasion. PLA also organized similar drills in 2022 when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island with multiple other Congress lawmakers.
Just recently, the Biden administration faced Chinese backlash after approving a $360 million of arms sale to Taiwan.
