(FeaturedHeadlines.com) House Speaker Mike Johnson denounced Democrats that are poised to vote against the SAVE Act that just passed the GOP-majority House.
The bill would require states to remove ineligible voters from the rolls while requiring new voters to prove their citizenship in person before their applications are accepted. Johnson said the only conclusion that can be drawn from the Democratic opposition to the bill is that they want illegal immigrants to participate in elections.
The House passed the bill with a 221-198 vote, but it is unlikely to pass the Democrat-majority Senate. President Biden has expressed his intent to veto the measure if it passes in the Senate. A statement released by the White House says the bill will not do anything to protect the integrity of federal elections, but it will prevent eligible voters from participating in elections.
Johnson refers to the bill as “common sense legislation” and questions why Democrats would justify voting against the bill. Johnson said immigrants can go into a welfare office to receive benefits and register to vote in the same visit. He said there needs to be more safeguards in place to prevent foreign nationals from fraudulently voting in federal elections.
Democrats say there are effective safeguards in place and there is not a significant problem with noncitizens casting ballots in the United States. 41 immigrants were found to have voted in the 2016 election in the state of North Carolina. 19 of them faced prosecution, but there are hundreds of thousands of voters in the North Carolina voter database that do not have ID numbers to verify they are citizens of the United States.
A Georgia audit in 2022 found over 1,600 noncitizens in the voter database, but election officials were able to prevent them from registering to vote in the election. The debate about election integrity ensued following the 2020 presidential race and President Biden has stated during this campaign that Trump will not accept the outcome of the 2024 election.
