Football Protege’ Killed In Car Crash Aged 20

(FeaturedHeadlines.com) A rising star in college football tragically died on Monday, June 24 after a fatal car crash in Minnesota.

Officers from the Carver County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene of a one-vehicle wreck on a road in Hollywood Township in the early hours of Monday morning. When first responders arrived, they discovered a 2013 black BMW M5 in a ditch, with Teigan Martin as the sole occupant of the car. Officers stated that 20-year-old Martin died on the scene.

Authorities indicated that they believe Martin was driving east at a high rate of speed, when for unknown reasons, he crossed over into the other lane before entering the ditch on the side of the road, where the car rolled. Authorities stated that Martin was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Martin played as Tight End for the University of South Florida during the 2023 season after transferring from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he played during the 2022 season. He started his football career at Mayer Lutheran High School in Mayer, Minnesota, helping his team win the Minnesota Prep Bowl state championship during his senior year in the fall of 2021.

Joey Knight, a sports reporter for the Tampa Bay Times, stated that though Martin was still attending classes at USF, he was no longer playing football there. Kip Kovar, a sports writer and editor for the Herald Journal in Minnesota, wrote a touching obituary for Martin, calling him a “tremendous athlete” who was a kind and thoughtful person off the field.

It is unclear whether alcohol played a factor in the crash. Toxicology reports will be performed with the autopsy and authorities are continuing to investigate the crash.

The USF Bulls released a statement about Martin’s death, saying that they are “deeply saddened” by the loss and praying for his family and friends.

Martin’s funeral was held on Saturday, June 29 in Waconia, Minnesota at Trinity Lutheran Church.
