IDF Discovers More Dead Hostages During Latest Raid

( The Israel Defense Force (IDF) announced on May 24 that Israeli forces recovered the bodies of three hostages held by Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Hamas took more than 200 hostages during its October 7, 2023 surprise attack on Israel, in which some 1,200 people were also killed.

A joint operation by Israeli military and intelligence operators recovered the hostages’ bodies from the city of Jabaliya in the northern Gaza Strip. The bodies have since been returned to Israel.

Israel has a national and moral duty to recover hostages taken by Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. The Israeli military said that they will continue hostage recovery operations until all hostages are returned.

The three deceased hostages—Orion Hernandez Radoux, Hanan Yablonka, and Michel Nisenbaum—were killed during the October 7 attack. The three men were believed to be alive prior to the recovery of their bodies during the operation, due to a lack of information about their status.

The hostages were kidnapped alongside several other people from the Mefalsim area; the bodies of four other hostages kidnapped at the same time were previously recovered from a tunnel system in Jabaliya.

More than 120 hostages, dead or alive, are still believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza. The IDF has said that at least 37 of the hostages still in Gaza are dead.

One of the living hostages, Naama Levy, was shown on video alongside other abducted Israeli female soldiers. In the video, Hamas militants threatened and insulted the women. Levy pleaded with her captors, claiming to have friends in Palestine.

Families of Israeli hostages pointed to the video as a reminder of why Israel should focus on securing the hostages’ release. Other Israelis pointed to the video as evidence of Hamas’ poor treatment of hostages. The footage was recovered from body cameras worn by Hamas militants, which were obtained by Israeli forces.

Although the bodies of some hostages have been recovered, the hope is that other hostages can be recovered alive; however, such an outcome is clearly not guaranteed.
