(FeaturedHeadlines.com) – Political commentators have speculated for months about whether former First Lady Michelle Obama will run for US president in 2024. However, Obama’s office confirmed on March 5 that she has no intention of returning to the White House this election cycle.
Some Republicans have contended that Obama may replace US President Joe Biden as the Democratic Party’s 2024 candidate amid concerns about Biden’s age and cognitive competence. Regardless, Biden is on track to win the Democratic nomination during the party’s convention in August.
Obama “will not be running for president” in 2024, her office said in a statement, noting that the former first lady has expressed such a stance several times in recent years. Instead, Obama intends to help Biden’s campaign alongside her husband, former US President Barack Obama, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Michelle Obama’s involvement in the Biden campaign will be limited in comparison to her husband’s, in part because she is reluctant to return to full-time work in the political realm, the sources reportedly said. Obama also has other commitments holding her back, the sources added.
Nevertheless, a Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll released in February found that a majority of conservatives, 56%, believe that the Democratic Party will not ultimately nominate Biden as their presidential candidate. Nearly half of respondents, 47%, believe that Obama will replace Biden as their candidate.
The conservative respondents also said that California Governor Gavin Newsom, Vice President Kamala Harris, or even independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could replace Biden on the top of the Democratic ticket, according to the poll.
Americans are aware of Biden’s status, but few Democrats are willing to “say it out loud,” Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller said. However, Democrats across the United States are urging the party to replace Biden behind the scenes, Miller said.
Based on Obama’s statement, it appears unlikely that the former first lady will take up Biden’s mantle, although other possible replacements remain.
