Missing American Found Dead in Mexican Cemetery

(FeaturedHeadlines.com) – Law enforcement authorities in Mexicali, Mexico, discovered the body of an American woman at a cemetery near the Tijuana Highway following her disappearance from her hometown of Renton, Washington, in February. The Renton Police Department worked with Mexican officials to confirm the body as missing 54-year-old hairdresser Reyna Hernandez.

Hernandez’s friends reported her missing on February 28, after the hairdresser failed to return from running errands, answer her phone, or open her salon. Police subsequently conducted several searches and followed dozens of leads in the case. Evidence ultimately pointed towards Hernandez having been taken involuntarily on February 26.

Investigators in Renton received a report from Mexicali, Mexico, on March 8 about the discovery of an unidentified woman’s body at a cemetery along the Tijuana Highway. Renton police then engaged with their Mexican counterparts to identify the body as Hernandez.

Renton police are now working with US federal partners and Mexican law enforcement to determine the circumstances of Hernandez’s death, according to Renton Police Department Investigations Commander Chandler Swain. The discovery of Hernandez’s death is the “worst possible outcome” for the missing person case, Swain said.

Mexican police have already recovered Hernandez’s vehicle and arrested a 61-year-old suspect in the case from Renton on unrelated charges. If investigators determine that Hernandez’s death occurred in the United States, then US authorities will seek to extradite the suspect to face prosecution in the proper legal jurisdiction.

Detectives assess that Hernandez’s death is the result of a domestic violence crime, although her relation to the suspect is unclear at the time of this writing. Hernandez’s body reportedly showed indications of torture, having been restrained at the hands and feet, bound in a blanket, and shot in the head.

Although an investigation into the case remains ongoing, Hernandez’s friends and families can now take some solace in the fact that investigators discovered her body and are pursuing justice for her apparent kidnapping, torture, and death.
