(FeaturedHeadlines.com) – Following an assassination attempt against former US President Donald Trump, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk threw his support behind the 2024 Republican nominee, despite having previously declined to endorse any candidate in the race. Musk said that he fully endorses Trump and wished him a speedy recovery from his injury.
During a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, a gunman attempted to assassinate Trump, shooting him in the right ear from a nearby rooftop. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, also killed one audience member and injured two others before Secret Service agents killed him.
Musk shared a video of Trump getting up after the shooting, surrounded by Secret Service agents, and raising his fist to let audience members know he was alright. The moment resulted in several viral photographs of Trump appearing virile despite the assassination attempt.
The incident has also put the Secret Service and its leadership under scrutiny. A local law enforcement officer noticed the shooter nearly 30 minutes before the assassination attempt, took a picture, and reported him as suspicious.
Other attendees of the rally also said that they reported the gunman to police in the minutes preceding the assassination attempt. Nevertheless, security services at the rally failed to neutralize the gunman before he began shooting at Trump.
Consequently, US lawmakers are investigating the incident. The US Senate Homeland Security Committee announced a bipartisan probe into the assassination attempt. The US House Oversight Committee is also investigating the matter.
Secret Service Director Kimberely Cheatle is expected to attend a hearing with the House Oversight Committee on July 22. Questions remain about how a rooftop so close to Trump was left unsecure, panel chairman James Comer said.
It remains to be seen exactly how the assassination attempt will impact the 2024 presidential race, but if Musk’s endorsement of Trump is any indication, the former president may see a boost in the polls after the attempt on his life.
