Parkland Father Furious With Kamala Over Gun Control Picture.

( The Biden administration has repeatedly called for stricter gun control measures in the United States, often off the back of high-profile shootings. During a March 23 trip to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School—the site of a 2018 mass shooting—Vice President Kamala Harris again urged stricter gun laws.

However, Harris received pushback from Ryan Petty, the father of one of the victims killed during the school shooting. Petty called on Harris to stop “using” his daughter for a photo opportunity, after the vice president posted a picture to social media of her looking at a memorial for the victims.

In the post, Harris advocated for universal background checks, red flag laws, and an assault weapons ban. The perpetrator of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School legally obtained firearms after having passed a background check, but had been frequently reported to law enforcement prior to the incident.

During her trip to the school, Harris called on state governments to pass red flag laws and use funding provided by the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to help implement such policies. Harris also announced the launch of a National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center to support the implementation of red flag laws.

The resource center will aid state and local law enforcement, attorneys, judges, medical personnel, and social service providers to optimize the usage of red flag laws, which allow family members and police to seize firearms from owners believed to pose a risk to themselves or others. However, some lawmakers criticized the center as a potential avenue to restrict Americans’ Second Amendment rights.

US Congressman Thomas Massie said that lawmakers did not authorize such a center, noting that the Biden administration did not announce the project until after Congress passed a federal government funding bill. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene accused the Justice Department of attempting to use “every spy tool” available to violate Second Amendment Rights through red flag laws.

The Second Amendment of the US Constitution guarantees the right of the people to keep and bear arms, although the government has imposed numerous restrictions on the personal ownership of firearms.

Regardless of the Biden administration’s intent, Petty simply wants officials like Harris to stop using his daughter’s death to push further restrictions on firearms.
