(FeaturedHeadlines.com) President Joe Biden’s dismal debate performance has brought many Democratic heavyweights, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, into the spotlight who can replace him to compete against former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race. However, California political insiders believe that Newsom is unlikely to impress nationwide voters despite his popularity in the Golden State.
William Swain, the president of the California Policy Center, stated that Newsom’s popularity is even declining in his own state, adding that he has completely failed to win the support of countrywide Democrats as he does not bring anything new to the presidential ticket.
Newsom will manage to win the 54 electoral college votes of California but will never put on an impressive show in battleground states, where Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro or Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer have good chances to win if they are allowed to run for the presidency, Swain added.
Nonetheless, Swain claimed that Newsom is a “clever debater” like Trump and can lure undecided voters due to his ability to make up things during the debate and come up with counterpunches to attack his opponent instead of surrendering against him. Being assertive and counter-attacking your opponent is an important characteristic of any debater, Swain continued, which Newsom seems to possess.
Newsom has been often criticized for running a shadow presidential campaign, but the governor has dismissed any possibility of running for the White House this year, claiming he would never betray the president.
Some political observers also suggest that Newsom is preparing for his possible 2028 presidential run and is just backing Biden to stay in the good graces of the Democratic establishment.
After Biden’s poor debate performance, Newsom fled to Washington to attend a meeting between the president and Democratic governors. Now he is headed to New Hampshire to participate in the “Blue Summer Campaign Kick-Off” where he will boost the Biden-Harris ticket after Trump secured a lead in the state won by Democrats in the last five presidential elections.
