(FeaturedHeadlines.com) – Fans of the 1970s police television series “Starsky and Hutch” lost half of the titular cop duo on January 4, when actor David Soul died at the age of 80. Soul played detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson in the series, which brought him worldwide fame.
Soul died in the company of family members on January 4 after a “valiant battle” for life, according to a statement from his wife, Helen Snell. Soul was a multi-talented performer who could sing, act, and create, the statement said. Soul’s passion and laughter will be remembered by all those people whose lives he impacted, the statement added.
Soul is survived by co-star Paul Michael Glaser, who played the role of detective Dave Starsky. Glaser also issued a statement acknowledging his long-time co-star’s death and wishing Soul’s family well.
Soul was born in Chicago in 1943 as David Solberg and spent his childhood in South Dakota and Germany. In 1959, Soul became involved in John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign. Kennedy’s calls to public service inspired Soul to pursue diplomatic work, but he ultimately drifted toward the performing arts. However, he remained involved in the anti-war movement during the course of his career.
Soul’s entry into the entertainment world was “purely accidental,” according to an official biography on the actor’s website. Soul’s theater career began in Minneapolis, but eventually took him to New York City and Los Angeles.
Soul has starred in more than 700 hours of film and television productions, including “Starsky and Hutch,” which drew international acclaim. Soul directed multiple television episodes, including for “Starsky and Hutch,” and directed three documentary films.
Additionally, Soul recorded five musical albums, songs from which have reached the top of the charts. Soul once said that he wanted to be known for his music.
Soul held citizenships in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Soul died in London, where he settled with his wife. The performer is survived by five sons and one daughter.
