He said that is communism, not a mere policy tweak. He framed the Democratic Party as drifting left under pressure from socialist activists and said that shift could cost elections.

Maher has pressed the same case on his HBO show. In a segment titled “Commie By Your Name,” he said the Democratic Socialists of America are “actually communist,” and he tried to prove it by quoting their materials on public control of sectors of the economy. He argued that party leaders duck plain language because they fear backlash. He warned that voters will punish that dodge and that denial only fuels a bigger loss later.

Maher said labels matter less than outcomes. If politicians push state control of energy, health care, or finance, he calls that communism. He said Democratic leaders act “cowardly” when they pretend the agenda is moderate while celebrating candidates who embrace the Democratic Socialists of America. He added that mocking concerns about crime, prices, or border policy chases away moderates and independents who decide nationwide races.

Maher did not claim the entire Democratic Party has adopted a communist platform. He said the party is being pulled by its socialist wing and that party leaders lack the spine to push back. He suggested he could vote Republican in 2028 if Democrats do not course-correct toward the center.

Critics will say he blurs socialism and communism. Maher answers that government control over “key industries” is a bright line. On the strength of the record, his charge hits hardest where activists use takeover language rather than competition or regulation. That aligns with common sense: Americans accept safety rules and referees, but they recoil when the referee grabs the ball and plays. If Democrats keep ignoring that instinct, they will keep bleeding the middle.

The Political Stakes If Democrats Shrug

Maher’s message lands because it is consistent across shows and interviews. He keeps telling Democrats that denying the problem will not calm voters who feel squeezed.
