(FeaturedHeadlines.com) Steve Bannon, advisor to former president Trump, has tried for one last chance to avoid jail time with an emergency motion.
Bannon, now a popular media figure and commentator, filed the motion on June 11 with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Bannon was convicted by a federal jury in July, 2022, after he was held in contempt of congress by the House of Representatives for refusing to obey a subpoena. The House’s Jan. 6 Select Committee, run by Democrats, wanted Bannon to testify as part of its attempt to paint Trump as responsible for what Democrats call an “insurrection” at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Bannon’s emergency motion hit the court just two weeks before he is set to start serving a four-month prison sentence. Another Trump advisor, Peter Navarro, was convicted for the same thing, and has been serving a four-month prison term since March.
Bannon had been disappointed by an earlier ruling from judge Carl J. Nichols granting the prosecution’s request that Bannon go to jail on July 1. According to media reports, Bannon’s emergency motion takes aim at what it calls the “political realities” of Bannon’s prosecution. The host of the popular show War Room says he’s being targeted for partisan reasons, in part to prevent him from being able to advise Trump during the campaign season before the November presidential election.
The motions claims that Bannon was targeted by the Biden administration for his opposition to its policies. The government is deliberately trying to keep Bannon’s views out of mainstream news and out of the public’s mind during the presidential campaign, according to the filing. This would “effectively bar Mr. Bannon from serving as a meaningful advisor,” his attorneys wrote.
In a recent interview, Bannon told former Fox News Host Tucker Carlson that he isn’t afraid of going to jail. Bannon, 70, told Carlson that conservatives had better “wake up” and realize that they’re in a war with the Democrats, and that they need to start fighting like they know it.
