Andrew Cuomo Slams Democrats’ Open Border Plan

(FeaturedHeadlines.com) Although former New York governor Andrew Cuomo resigned from his position in 2021 due to sexual harassment allegations, he has nevertheless remained an active voice in American politics. On June 21, 2024, Cuomo appeared on comedian Bill Maher’s show, where he blasted the Biden administration for its handling of the immigration crisis at the United States’ southern border.

Cuomo, a Democrat, said that he understands the stance of the “extreme left” on open borders, but suggested that their theories implemented as policies have been a mistake. Simply opening the borders and setting migrants loose in the US ends up costing American cities, according to Cuomo.

The Biden administration is letting migrants into the US with “no jobs, no training, [and] no help assimilating into society,” Cuomo said. New York City Mayor Eric Adams or New York Governor Kathy Hochul could have taken steps to address the issue, but failed to do so, Cuomo added.

However, Adams’ office pushed back on Cuomo’s claim, contending that the mayor has no legal power to turn away buses of migrants arriving in New York City. The city is obliged to provide shelter to migrants with little help from the federal government, Adams’ office said.

Cuomo’s clash with fellow New York Democrats may be an attempt to set the stage for a return to politics in 2025. Cuomo may carry political baggage from his sexual harassment scandal, but voters have short memories and tend to act based on imminent concerns like the migrant crisis, columnist Bob McManus said.

The sexual harassment allegations against Cuomo are not the only political baggage that he carries. Cuomo remains under fire for his public health policies as governor.

On June 11, 2024, Cuomo participated in a transcribed interview with the US House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, during which lawmakers questioned him about the impacts of his policies regarding nursing homes in the state. Not only did Cuomo’s policies put the elderly in harm’s way, but he also attempted to cover up his failures by concealing the death rate at nursing homes in New York, Chairman Brad Wenstrup said.

Cuomo may be critical of fellow Democrats on their handling of the migrant crisis, but that does not appear to have saved him from the scrutiny of Republican counterparts.
