DeSantis Will Not Comply with Surgeon General’s Unconstitutional Gun Violence Advisory

(FeaturedHeadlines.com) Following the Surgeon General’s suggested policy changes to address gun violence, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis pushed back and said his state will not comply with the “unconstitutional” move from the Biden administration.
Dr. Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, declared a gun violence a public health crisis on Tuesday, June 25 following the release of a nearly 40-page report about the issue. The report states that the leading cause of death for children and adolescents since 2020 are gun-related injuries, surpassing poisoning, childhood cancers, drug overdoses, and motor vehicle crashes. The report also included specific policy changes, several of which need congressional approval to be implemented.
Some of the policy changes Murthy recommended are bans on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines outside of military or police use, expanding laws related to purchaser licensing, universal background checks,” as well as “creating safer conditions” for public places in relation to open carry of firearms.
DeSantis immediately pushed back against Murthy, calling the move an “unconstitutional power-grab” that violates the Second Amendment. The Florida Republican drew similarities of this move to moves made during the Covid pandemic under the guise of “public health” that deprived law-abiding citizens of their rights, pointing out that he signed legislation to stop the overreach from “unelected bureaucrats.” DeSantis added that the state of Florida will “always reject” such moves from the Biden administration.
Murthy stated that the goal of his advisory was to move the issue of gun violence from the political sphere and place it in the public health sphere. Murthy also said that many people he’s spoken to from all over the country have expressed concerns that gun violence is an “intractable problem” with no solutions, but he disagrees with that assertion and believes his proposed policies will help to curb gun violence in America. The Surgeon general also added that he believes failing to deal with the crisis of gun violence in America is a “moral crisis.”
