(FeaturedHeadlines.com) Democratic Senator John Fetterman visited Israel for the first time on Wednesday, June 26, meeting with the country’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. The two shared warm greetings and discussion, leading Netanyahu to state that Israel has “no better friend” than Fetterman.
Though many progressive Democrats have been pushing back on the U.S.’s support for Israel, Fetterman has made a name for himself by vigorously defending Israel during their war against Hamas. The Pennsylvania Senator has both condemned Hamas for their vicious attacks on Israel on October 7 and also called out his fellow Democrats who have pressured President Joe Biden to stop sending military and financial aid to the Jewish state.
In an interview in Jerusalem just before the first Presidential debate, Fetterman spoke about the importance of supporting Israel, suggesting that those who won’t vote for Biden due to his support of Israel are “de facto” supporting Trump and may cost Biden the election. Fetterman, never one to mince words, said progressives who are willing to do that must “own” their actions.
Netanyahu was effusive in his praise of Fetterman, speaking about how the Senator held up an Israeli flag after pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside his house. Netanyahu calling Fetterman’s actions “courageous and heart-warming,” adding that Fetterman displays “moral clarity” in his actions and a willingness to plainly state the truth.
When speaking about the protestors who showed up outside his home, Fetterman stated that he was unwilling to “pander” to his critics. Though Fetterman expressed empathy for people living in Gaza, especially the children, he said those who are concerned about Palestinians should direct their anger at Hamas for creating the situation rather than Israel for defending itself.
At the end of their meeting, Netanyahu stated that he planned to visit Fetterman during his trip to Washington, D.C. in July, where he is expected to address Congress at the end of the month. Though some Democrats have stated that they will boycott Netanyahu’s appearance, Fetterman expressed confidence that most would attend.
