Iconic US Tupperware Brand Shutting US Factories Moving Production to Mexico

(FeaturedHeadlines.com) The iconic plastic food container manufacturer, Tupperware, has announced to close its last manufacturing plant in the United States and will move the operations to Mexico.

The brand was operating its last US factory in Hemingway, South Carolina, the closure of which will lay off almost 150 workers of the plant between September to January.

Most of the Tupperware products used in the US and Canadian markets were already being manufactured in their plant located in Lerma, Mexico which will now increase its manufacturing capacity after the exit of the company from the US.

The company has already filed a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) request with the state of South Carolina. WARN is the 1988 labor law which requires most companies to file a request at least 60 days before closing their operations or launching mass layoffs.

Meanwhile, the company suggested that the decision to close business operations has nothing to do with the performance of their US-based employees, who always worked hard to help the brand reach its goals.

Tupperware was founded in 1946 and started its Hemingway plant in 1976 to increase its production capacity after their products became famous in America.

Business insiders believe that Tupperware’s closure was only a matter of time due to their recent controversies. Last year, the company was about to be delisted from the New York Stock Exchange due to its failure to file 2022 10K forms with the Securities and Exchange Commission within the deadline.

The company also indicated last year that it might close its operations soon in the US due to reduced sales and lower profit margins. However the brand won the confidence of the investors after reaching the debt restructuring deal that allowed them to borrow $21 million. Right after the deal, their shares surged by 50%, which gives them a renewed hope to continue their operations in the US.

Earlier this year, Tupperware announced once again that it may not be able to survive 2024.
