(FeaturedHeadlines.com) Lucy Letby, a 34-year-old neonatal nurse in the United Kingdom, was convicted in August 2023 for killing seven babies and trying to kill six others. On July 2, 2024, Letby was again found guilty of trying to murder another baby in her care.
A previous panel was unable to reach a decision on whether Letby attempted to kill the infant, known as Child K, in February 2016. However, the new jury found her guilty of trying to kill the premature baby by removing her breathing tube.
Prosecutors said that Letby dislodged the baby’s breathing tube and stood by doing nothing while she fought for her life, which a doctor noticed. Letby then removed the tube twice more in an effort to make the first dislodgement appear accidental, according to prosecutors.
The actions were that of a “cold-blooded, calculated killer,” senior prosecutor Nicolo Wyn Williams said. Letby said that she has no memories of the event and has denied ever harming a child.
Nevertheless, the court sentenced Letby to life in prison for the crime—her 15th life sentence. Jurors took just two hours and 20 minutes to reach a unanimous decision to convict Letby. During the sentencing, Letby again claimed she is innocent of any wrongdoing.
In May, Letby’s defense team failed to appeal her previous convictions. Police are also examining 4,000 admissions of babies into the neonatal units where Letby worked, as well as investigating whether the hospital where the crimes occurred should face prosecution.
Baby K’s mother said in a victim impact statement that Letby will “never hurt another child” again. Justice James Goss said that Letby is remorseless and that her crimes have no mitigating factors.
Prosecutors said that the shocking nature of Letby’s crime was difficult to comprehend and that they still do not know her motive. Regardless, they proved Letby’s guilt and court and ensured that she will never again take an innocent, young life.
