(FeaturedHeadlines.com) Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi doubled down on her support for President Joe Biden in the wake of his disastrous debate performance against Republican challenger Donald Trump. Pelosi defended Biden’s competence and dismissed the performance as a “bad night” on the debate stage, instead suggesting that Trump could be suffering from dementia.
Pelosi said that she regularly discusses politics with Biden, who she claims is “attuned” to issues and well informed. Biden has essentially won the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination already, Pelosi also said, pushing back on speculation about plans to replace Biden with an alternative nominee. Replacing Biden could be “chaotic,” Pelosi added.
Biden’s poor debate performance sparked concerns among some Democrats about his ability to beat Trump on Election Day, leading some figures to call on him to drop out of the race. However, the Biden campaign said that they have not held any discussions on ending his bid for the nomination.
The Biden campaign told donors that he can recover from the debacle, but one donor said that they remain unconvinced by reassurances from the campaign. A Democratic lawmaker said that the only person who could convince Biden to drop out is his wife, Jill Biden.
The campaign also attempted to frame the debate as a loss for Trump as well, but some poll results suggest otherwise. Trump’s support among registered voters rose from 37% in May to 41% in the days following the June 27 debate, one poll found. Biden’s support remained steady, from 37% in May to 38% after the debate.
Moreover, 41% of Democrats want to replace Biden with a different nominee, the poll found. Trump voters were also nearly twice as likely to express enthusiastic support for the candidate compared to Biden voters, according to the poll.
Although Pelosi and the Biden campaign are putting on a poker face, everyday voters appear swayed by Biden’s poor performance on the debate stage against Trump.
